How many tax forms should I have to fill up?
Sammy asked:
In 2007, I worked in Indiana until May & thereafter moved to California to work for a different company. Therefore, I have recieved two W-4 forms, one from each company. So should I file one tax return form for Indiana state, one for California & two forms for the Federal return? Or is should I file just one form for California (where I’m currently residing) & one for Federal?

You need to file a part-year/non-resident return for Indiana. Report only the IN income here.
You need to file a resident return for California and take a credit for taxes paid to Indiana. Report ALL income here.
You need to file the federal return with worldwide income.
Part of your answer is you must pay state taxes from the states where you earned the income (if they have state taxes.)
Three (maybe more?)
1 – Federal 1040 – add the amounts from the two W-2 together…
2 – California 1040 – or what ever they call it – California has weird rules regarding part year residents – I quess it is all the movie stars they have out there…
3 – Indiana 1040 – or what ever they call it
Check out their web sites for instructions… probably California.gov and Indiana.gov. (in Michigan they call it a MI-1040 – other states have their own form number)
4 – There may be other local taxes as well – Ask around to see if there are other California taxes…
(In Ohio it gets confusing because some counties or townships have a separate school tax as well as a local tax.
File the CA state and take the indiana credit. The California state equivalent of the 1040 is the 540 form.
